Urban retreat interior redesign
San Diego Harbor Club, San Diego, CA
The design of this urban weekend retreat in the heart of downtown San Diego is not just about beautiful finishes and objects, it is about why each finish and accessory was selected and deliberately placed throughout the home.
The client is passionate about world travel, photography and animals so a global theme of nature and wildlife runs through the retreat. Throughout the space, artifacts and large photo images from Antarctica, The Galapagos, South Africa, India, and Mongolia are carefully placed for display. Each photo was captured by the client’s camera. Using innovative techniques, the images are suspended in resin or printed with special inks onto aluminum and canvas to create an artistic storybook environment. There are photographic windows into the many travels and the clients relive those precious moments each time they pass by the images.
Walls of glass were introduced and maximize the spectacular harbor views from every room. Rare exotic wood finishes and veneers were selected for the custom cabinetry and echo the wildlife theme. Architectural lighting using the latest technologies with fully-integrated controls and LED fixtures are a part of this personalized design.
This interior design project was described in an article in San Diego Home Garden Lifestyles in October 2012. Click to read the article
Living Area"Penguins in Conversation" captured on film; adaptable seating with unusual angles; antique Romanian rug; custom-designed ebony coffee table which houses rare collection of "animal puzzles."
Living Area FireplaceA newly-added architectural feature, the fireplace, with a gorgeous reflective glass brick facade that anchors the television for viewing movies, a passion with the clients.
Kitchen and Dining AreaSensitile bar top with colorful changing LED lights, floating glass shelves, a "froggy" chandelier, shimmering aqua mother-of-pearl accent tile on the kitchen wall which has birch burl cabinet faces.
Bar AreaAn interesting and happy blend of geometric forms (squares, angles, curves) in flooring, furnishings, and cabinetry. Note the color change in the sensitile countertop.
Living Area and Guest RoomThe clever crowning jewel of this space: two view-blocking walls that enclosed the guest bedroom/den were replaced by glass walls allowing for an amazing transformation. Elephant photo on beaded surface in entry.
Living Area and Guest RoomApparently seamless cabinet facade in Timeo veneer which houses the television also hides the disappearing bed for the occasional guest. Camping-style safari chairs and a second antique rug complete the grouping.
Guest BathroomRare Timeo veneer, a fossil sink, metallic floor tile, focal glass tile accent wall in an iridescent medley of colors in the guest bathroom.
Master BedroomMaster bedroom with city views; the custom built-in headboard and surround deliberately anchor a bed in an otherwise awkward-shaped room.
BathroomA fossil sink and focal wall of slivers of iridescent stained glass tile spilling over into the adjacent shower.
BathroomIntegrated glass counter with gorgeous hues, "alligator" floor tiles. Not in the photo are complementing abalone and gems in accent tiles in the steam shower area.
